Get Down, Disco Clown
David Bailey Puts On The Costume (Featuring: Marie Helvin, British Vogue, Jun Ropé & L'Officiel Paris)
Tears of A Clown…
Turn your distress and tears into jeers
and into a grimace your sobbing and your pain...
Laugh, clown, at your shattered love!
Laugh at the grief that poisons your heart!- Pagliacci
From Pierrot to Pagliacci, lovesick, melancholy clowns are a favorite theme at Visions of Paradise. In fact, because these looks were so abundant in fashion during the 70’s and 80’s, I christened this look ‘Disco Clown’ on my old blog. Very silly of me but it had a ring to it.
Away With The Clouds, On With The Clowns…
Photographer David Bailey and British Vogue present: ‘Christmas For the Clowns’.
Plus, a David Bailey directed Japanese commercial for DOMON by JUN ROPÉ.
Now, let’s step into Classical Elegance…
A short film directed by David Bailey used for Japanese brand Domon, a capsule line from brand Jun Ropé. The same clown and ballerina from the Vogue editorial are featured in this commercial. The music is Tchaikovsky’s 6th symphony Pathètique.
Pas De Deux…
Send In The Clowns…
To close this newsletter, I leave you with this extravaganza of harlequin inspired pret-a-porter featuring: Angelo Tarlazzi, Kimijima, Jacques Gilles for Dietmar Sterling and Sonia Rykiel for L’Officiel Paris, 1980.
Translation from French to English:
«In The Nutcracker, the toys come to life for one night - a little bit like these photos. A sweet Pierrot dressed by Angelo Tarlazzi in a Scottish tartan silk taffeta from Géwé.
Looking towards him, with a small ball, a look created by Dik Brandsma, wearing three color felt with shoes by Stéphane Kélian. Further on, a doll wears an ensemble by Kimijima with Marescot sequins and Buche silk taffeta. Shoes by René Caty. The last character preferred a jersey two-piece by Jacques Gilles by Dietmar Sterling. Shoes are Maud Frizon.»
« Let’s indulge in a little dream... thanks to these crazy, extravagant and humorous ensembles. The first is a two-piece from Ling, of Abraham silk in a Scottish tartan with very puffy sleeves. Gloves from Barnier, shoes are Stéphane Killian. The second look is created by Sonia Rykiel, an embossed silk tunic worn over crêpe bermuda shorts.»
Alas, all things must come to an end…
